Martyn Jones MP looks forward to another Labour seat on the Wrexham County Council Executive
Thursday 8th November
Following the recent Labour victory in the Stansty by-election, Martyn Jones MP welcomes Labour’s entitlement to a seat on the Executive Board and several committees of Wrexham County Council.
This statement comes following Labour Candidate, David Bithell’s, victory in late October in the Stansty by-election. The Labour Candidate won the race by 99 votes. A 330 vote turnaround on the 2004 result.
Wrexham Council is due to meet on Monday to discuss the allocation of executive board and committee places. The Council is run by the Liberal Democrat/ Independent Alliance Group, headed by Councillor Aled Roberts.
Whilst an additional Labour seat on the Executive would not result in Labour control of the agenda it would enable a more full and frank debate on the issues that affect the people of Wrexham.
Martyn Jones MP stated:
“I look forward to the Labour group being allocated the additional seats due to them, including a further seat on the Council’s Executive Committee. This is appropriate in the current situation and befits the shifting democratic mandate in Wrexham. The people of Stansty spoke with a clear voice. They voted for change and elected a Labour Councillor to represent them. The Council must reflect this change and I would encourage the Liberal Democrat-led Conservative/Independent Alliance who currently run the council to respect the views of the electorate.
Whilst an additional seat will not be enough to give Labour a controlling interest on the Wrexham County Council Executive, it should be enough to give us a more serious voice so that we can begin to prevent funding cuts with public money being put into balances rather than core services.”
